Ceiling Fan light - works with chain but not switch?
Main Post:
I have a ceiling fan controlled by two switches - one for the fan and one for the light. A few months after moving in, the switch that controls the light on the fan stopped working, but the pull chain still turns the light on. The fan part still works from both the switch and the chain.
I replaced the light switch but it didn’t help. I also took the fan apart to see if I could notice if anything was disconnected but everything seemed to be in order (although my fan experience and knowledge is limited).
Is it weird that the pull chain would still turn the light on but the switch won’t? Time for a new fan or time for an electrician?
This sub is great and very helpful by the way. It makes me a little paranoid reading these posts though, just reading about all of the potential issues and how I am probably doing everything wrong!
Top Comment: Off the top of my head, I'm not sure why a light would work from it's own switch but not the wall switch, assuming a properly functioning switch in the box. I'd just replace the fan, because I'm a deeply lazy man and the last thing I want to do after renovating houses and fixing shit all day is fix my own shit. That said, it's pretty easy to troubleshoot a fan if you need to, not many parts. You can take it off the ceiling and "bench" test it in the ground with an extension cord and some jumpers, or you can hang it from the box. I'd recommend doing it on the ground though, much safer. Pull the blades, ensure the fan's switches are all in the off position, then hook it up to the cord. Use a multimeter to determine diagnose. Remember, 99% of home electrical repair doesn't actually require knowing how any of it works. Parts like capacitors and motors aren't really parts you service, you just replace them. So if the electricity goes into something you don't recognize and doesn't continue along the circuit, replace that part. Electricity at it's most basic (working) level works pretty much the same as water in pipes.
What are some of the most impressive fan-works?
Main Post:
Fan-fiction, fan-art, websites, fan animations. What ever seems like it took such serious dedication.
Mine is the Undertale fan animation which is about the different Undertale A.Us crossing over in a multiverse type thing with surprisingly good animation and a whole lot of references to Undertale fan-universes
Top Comment: I remember reading once that the single longest work of fiction in history was a Subspace Emissary fanfiction.
Franchises where the Fanworks are more popular than the official works.
Main Post:
RWBY: The series has a vocal amount of fans (and even haters) who adore the setting and characters, but not the show itself. As such, many of them are drawn towards fan works, with some of the most well-known ones even promoting themselves as being improved retellings of the show's narrative.
Many Sonic the Hedgehog fans are not into the games or other official material for several reasons but tend to remain involved with the community through fanfics, fan games, and fan art, amongst other fan works. Unsurprisingly, given the sheer size of the fandom, many Sonic groups are dedicated largely to fan works.
Shantae: One of the main appeals of the series, as told by its fans, are how charming and diverse the cast of characters is, all with standout designs, memorable personalities, and fantastic humor. Those who aren't frequenters of the indie scene or outright don't like the gameplay style of Metroidvanias often find themselves engaging with fan work as a way to grow attached to the characters, which isn't a hard task, as fanwork for Shantae is very abundant on the internet, safe for work or... otherwise.
Some fans of Danny Phantom don't care for the show itself, and only see it as an overrated cartoon that didn't do anything special, but are dedicated to the fanworks because they're enamored with some, but not all, of the characters.
It's becoming increasingly common for The Loud House fans to engage themselves in the vast display of fanworks rather than the show itself, with many admitting to finding the show too generic to invest in and that the fanworks are more interesting as a result.
Top Comment: I believe the people that engage with Touhou fanworks vastly outnumber those that actually play the games.
Added a fan to my Switch dock, and it works.

Top Comment: “They did not integrate a fan” Except they did, and it’s in the Switch. The vents provide enough airflow to allow the Switch to not overheat. This may keep the Switch physically cooler but you’re not gaining any noticeable performance or preserving the life of your Switch in any way.
One GPU fan always at full speed, the other works fine
Main Post:
Hi, so I recently got a weird issue with my GPU lately and was wondering if anyone could help me. Specs of my computer:
Case: Corsair 275R Airflow with 5 fans
Mobo: AsRock B550 Phantom gaming A/C
CPU: Ryzen 5 3600
CPU cooler: Hyper 212 Black Edition RGB
GPU: Gigabyte Eagle RTX 3060 Ti
RAM: 2 sticks of 8GB DDR4 2400mz
PSU: Gigabyte P650B 80 Plus Bronze 650w
Storage : 1x WD Blue SN550 NVMe m.2 1tb, 1x Kingston SSD 120gb, 2x WD Blue HDD 1tb
So I build my computer at around August 2019, but at that time I had a GTX 970 as my GPU, a Corsair TX650 80 Plus Bronze 650w as my PSU and no NVMe, and everything was working fine. Now, at around mid december, I changed my PSU and GPU for the ones listed above, and everything was again working fine.
But 3 days ago I installed my new WD Blue SN550 NVMe m.2 1tb in my computer. The slot for the NVMe is under the GPU (which is in the PCIe x4 slot), so I had to remove the GPU to put the NVMe. Since I did that, my GPU fans have been acting weird (there are 2 fans). Normally, the fans of my GPU will not spin at all at idle (28 - 30°C), would start spinning at around 40°C when I start gaming, and stop spinning when I close my game. But now, the left fan start spinning at full speed and make a loud noise 5 minutes after I start my computer if i'm not gaming, or it immediately start spinning at full speed if I launch a game. And it always stay at full speed even if i'm doing nothing or i close my game. The right fan is acting normally like before. What is weirder, is that the different softwares like MSI AB, HWinfo or Aorus Engine show that the fan is at 0 rpm.
What I did so far:
-Check my temps and everything is fine
-Change the fan speed with MSI AB and Aorus Engine
-Delete and reinstall GPU drivers
-Reinstall Windows
-Physically remove the GPU and reseat it in the PCIe x4 slot
-Use a different PSU connector on the GPU
-Remove the GPU and put it in the PCIe x3 slot instead of the x4
None of theses solutions worked, any ideas? Thank you in advance !

Have no real experience with this situation but maybe reseat the m.2 drive don't no it is possible it is somehow causing a short effecting power on the motherboard.

Only One Fan Works....
Main Post:
I have been having non stop issues with the RTX 3080TI Amp Holo Extreme card today, i noticed only one fan spins at any given time, regardless of temperature or load, is there any way to fix this please?
Also the Spectra lighting doesn't work at all now.

Let me guess, you're using Firestorm?
It's a POS software. I use Afterburner to control the fan speeds. No issue there
New ceiling fan only works on high speed
Main Post:
Help please. Total novice here, just installed a Hunter Avia II (from Costco) at my moms house. Light dims as it should and fan works but will only run on high. Had no issues stripping and connecting wires with one exception that might be issue? Instructions never mentioned where to connect red wire coming out of house. Googling shows it’s likely power to the fan/light kit to the wall, so I connected it with the yellow wire from the receiver and black wire from the fan. I don’t remember why I chose that but that’s what I decided at the time. Will post picture of diagram in comments. Any ideas? Thanks.

Kitchen exhaust fan not cutting it
Main Post:
No matter how clean I keep the filters, the exhaust over my stove seems essentially useless.
Keeping windows open is not really an option. I even hung a heavy curtain in the kitchen doorway but it doesnt seem to help.
What else can I do to prevent cooking smells from spreading around the house?
Top Comment: A lot of those range hoods are not literal exhaust hoods, they just filter grease and blow smoke/smells back into your kitchen. If there is no ductwork above the exhaust hood, then it doesn't vent outside. The next best thing would be a powerful air purifier in your kitchen. But at that price point, it wouldn't be much more to install a proper exhaust fan.
For pellet/wood stove- which works better? Fan in front of or behind stove to help circulate hot air?

Top Comment:
I have a fan on top of the pellet stove. It seems to work fine to spread the heat.
More than likely the pellet stove itself has a distribution fan which will move the warmth from the stove to the air around the stove but an external fan will move the air further.
